All the cooking shows seem to talk about the importance of quality ingredients. I believe that quality ingredients are the essentials of healthy eating and quality cooking. I enjoy searching for new recipes, partly because of all the new ingredients I use.
I came across the "ugly vegetable" concept a coupe years ago, and was keeping an eye on the offerings in my area. The "ugly vegetables" are the vegetables that cannot be sold through the local grocery stores due to the looks of the vegetables. A few companies have capitalized on this opportunity to offer mail delivery of the "ugly vegetables" to the subscribers at a discounted price. I think the idea is ingenious!
I tried out a couple firms that provides the mail-in "ugly vegetable" services in the area, and went with the Misfits Market. My only complaint is that the vegetables don't seem very ugly. That said, they are seasonal and organic, and always come fresh and with a large variety. My "madness" box of vegetables and fruits include 14 different varieties. With a recent improvement to their service offerings, I have a reasonable degree of freedom to select what I want from their offerings, which eliminates the surprise element. I look forward to the arrival of my ugly vegetable box every other week. They have become an essential part of my culinary adventures.
Imaging going to the grocery store and buy 14 different vegetables and fruits every week or every other week. My imagination isn't great, so I was never able to come up with 14 different varieties to buy. However, I believe that the vegetable subscription service has helped me expand my horizons on what I can cook. Also, it streamlined my weekly grocery shopping experience.
Getting a large variety of fresh and organic vegetables via mail every other week allow me to focus my weekly grocery shopping to largely the essentials in the bakery, cold cut, and dairy sections. This significantly reduced my weekly grocery shopping time. Getting new and exciting vegetables also prompt me to look for new recipes and experience new flavors. The best benefit of all: I am reducing food waste! These vegetables are not eligible for grocery stores because of how they look, so they would otherwise be going to the landfill. I urge everyone to look into these services in their areas.
